Email jams hospital computer system
An investigation was under way after a health authority office worker threw a spanner into an NHS computer network by inadvertently sending an email to thousands of people. The woman sent an email asking if she could have a chair and filing cabinet which were not being used. She thought the message had been sent to colleagues in her office.
But it found its way onto the computers of health workers across Cambridgeshire. Recipients then sent jokey replies and computer staff had to be called in to ensure the network was not choked by email traffic.
Health authority officials said "no critical patient care systems were affected" but it had taken "hours" for the email log jam to be cleared.
Officials have not named the woman and would not say where she works or what she does. But they said in her email she had been asking whether she could have a chair and filing cabinet that were not being used.
Health authorities across Cambridgeshire - including the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Mental Health Partnership, the Greater Peterborough Primary Care Partnership, Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire Primary Care Trusts, East Cambridgeshire and Fenland Primary Care Trust and the Huntingdon Primary Care Trust - issued a joint statement about the episode after details were leaked to a local newspaper.
"On Wednesday an NHS worker inadvertently sent an email intended for colleagues in a local team to around 5,000 email accounts on the Cambridgeshire NHS network.
"The email was a simple request to inquire about redundant office equipment," said the statement.
"The email resulted in some light-hearted responses from a small number of NHS staff across Cambridgeshire. Although the responses were harmless, they nevertheless did result in an unnecessary increase in network traffic.
"Information Technology (IT) staff took prompt action in asking staff to refrain from responding and the situation quickly returned to normal. No critical patient care systems were adversely affected."
